NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 75. Bulk reel: 384 a) 5:45 AM. 25/IV/73. Cloudy. Ascending whistles; in several of these a double sound is heard. I don't know if this is the production of two birds (two males??) or if one bird is producing dissonant sound from two sources. After this, some quiet "ao" calls. Quality: 2. Level: +2. LN. 5:55 AM. Then I focused on a male which was apparently foraging (it had just completed a display flight). It gives some quiet (at one place an incompletely composed ascending whistle) talk. Then another bird arrives (apparently the female of the pair) and the two forage giving quiet talk (some quiet talk also by Dick Zusi and PAS). Quality: 2. Level: +2. b) 5:35 AM. 26/IV/73. Windy!! hazy. Two ascending whistles. This was definitely only one bird and note apparent double sound. Quality: 2-3. Level: +2. LN. One display, saved because preceded by a loud "slap," although don't know for sure if this was produced voluntarily by the bird; it could have been a branch breaking, although it is heard to occur after the bird took off. Quality: 2-3. Level: +2. 25/IV/73 - First sound heard today was a display @ 5:25 AM (!!) down by km 22.5. Arrived up @ km 21 between 5:35 and 5:40 AM and found birds displaying both above and below the road. 26/IV - Very windy and noisy and mostly not recorded or discarded; saved only things of particular interest where least noisy. Bird's first display was @ ~ 5:30 AM; the whistles recorded were after the bird's second display. Notes of 27/IV/73 - @ Km 21 - Clear; rained hard during the night. First displays heard today were @ 5:28 and 5:20 AM; displaying was general by 5:40 AM. Description of display seen 10/V/73: Seen fairly well, although not too light, with binocular and with bird going away from me. Wing beats too fast to be 100% certain but little doubt that they did not go too far above the horizontal. Below, the "Monarch pattern" went down to ~ 60¡; again too fast to be 100% sure, but I believe I "caught" the wing tips meeting; the wings were strongly bowed and it seems quite possible that the tips of the feathers did touch. Other Behaviors: Perform Visual Display.
