Observation details
Two were reported yesterday at this location by Kirk Swenson, and one was seen earlier today. When I arrived, a family was having a picnic at the corner of S. River Road and Babel Slough Road, under the trees just east of the wood pile. One person was riding a dirt bike around the bare field, right past the wood pile where the towhees had been previously seen. The wood pile was in full sun and it was very hot. I walked along the road, and after a few minutes heard a catlike mewing sound right near the edge of the road (north side of the road). It was coming from the dense brush, most of which looked like poke-cherry. I made some squeaking sounds which did not have an immediate effect but eventually one Green-tailed Towhee hopped up into the lower part of a tree right at the edge of the road. Its white throat, delineated by a black malar stripe, and rusty crown were immediately obvious. Plain gray underparts.
