Observation details

Seven Virginia Rails, as follows. West Cove #2 (2 Virginia Rails) - at 3:43 P.M., I heard a Virginia Rail grunt calling from the innermost (northwest) corner of the cove and simultaneously a second Virginia Rail grunt calling from the middle of the cove, behind me. One of these birds was observed in short flight at 3:54 P.M. and again at 4:12 P.M., each time dropping into the Spartina alterniflora edge. Over a period of ten minutes, this Virginia Rail came into close view in the Spartina edge, allowing for great observations. At one point it approached to within a foot of the canoe. Several photos were taken here, to be posted. East Cove #1 (3 Virginia Rails) - three Virginia Rails grunt called near simultaneously at 4:48 P.M., two of them very close to the cove Spartina edge, one further south and near the "Phragmites island". One of these rails was seen well beginning at 4:52 P.M. at water's edge in the south portion of the cove, moving slowly through the Spartina (photos taken). The two close rails were heard again at 4:57 P.M. on my departure from the cove. Mill Creek (2 Virginia Rails) - two Virginia Rails were heard simultaneously grunt calling from the easternmost portion of marsh grasses at 5:24 P.M. when I canoed deep into Mill Creek. A third rail called from the Phragmites island, and I took this to be one of the birds heard from East Cove #1. I could not confirm the presence of Clapper Rail today.
