Observation details
As I looked at several sources (Sibley and a bunch of online things, including Cornell's All About Birds), I'm pretty confident that this is indeed a YBFL, likely a first year bird. The angle of the head in these shots does not show the eye ring as boldly as I saw it, nor does it show the slight crest of the head that we saw. What is evident, especially if you enlarge the shots a bit, is the yellow-olive coloration in the low contrast throat, which Sibley says is useful for birds even with little yellow. Pretty distinctive wing bars were also observed.
