Observation details

Seen right at eBird location. Presumably an adult female given the time of year in conjunction with significant plumage wear and a pale throat. She was seen very well for 15-20 mins. Medium-sized hummer with chunky body, and square head. Bill was fairly short and straight; distinctly reddish at the base becoming dingy and grayish moving outwards towards an all dark bill tip. Pale below, with bronze-green upperparts. A little greenish wrapping around on sides of upper breast. Thick, clean white postocular stripe contrasting distinctly with dusky auriculars and face. She was calling near constantly, giving distinct "tchink" notes in rapid succession and occasionally a buzzy jumble of notes somewhat reminiscent of Anna's. She was clearly defending a number of penstemon patches in the area. Photos. Will upload back-of-camera photos soon and actually Jpgs. later.
