Observation details
Large, fluffed out adult sitting on the wooden deck railing when I looked out the window! It sat facing me (legs almost invisible, just toes sticking out) and it slowly swung its head around, surveying the yard for prey. Not sure what it expected to find. Very few birds as a result, but they moved in after it left. After ten minutes, it slowly turned its footing, then launched and landed on a pile of leaves where it saw something. It missed, but, the hawk spent about a minute poking its talons into the leaves, and walking around on the pile, searching for any movement. Then it flew off, and some birds cautiously returned.
