Observation details

Through-the-window Photo. Dark hood with convex edge; clear contrast between the hood and the brown back; gray sides and flanks. Difficult to find good ID information for this subspecies, especially for separating female from Slate-colored, Oregon females and 1st year birds. Looked at photos in Macaulay Library, and I likely would have reported some of those as Oregon or Slate-colored. Even for what I assume were males, the photos showed a range of features considered acceptable documentation. Would be interested in reference to field ID guidance. Without good ID guidance, this subspecies is likely under-reported along the Front Range.
