Observation details
**RARE | initially detected by song, an abrupt “pizza” (pEET-zah) from high in the oak canopy of the trail from the parking lot into the West Meadow. The bird was pretty vocal when first encountered (8:00AM) but was singing much less frequently when I left around 11AM; often not calling for ~10 minutes at a time. A fairly large empid that was mostly yellow-green (not YBFL yellow, but brighter than the other emojis we see at Gilsland). Throat was white, surprisingly hard to see initially but studying in the scope later this stood out. Bill was very broad and completely yellow on lower mandible. We noted the low primaries (for an empid) since we’d been discussing flycatcher morphology on the walk even before encountering this bird. Very fun find on the weekly bird walk at Gilsland! Patch bird!
