Observation details
Continuing rare Fratercula, apparently found last Wednesday. Associating with Rhinoceros Auklets in the protected waters of Neah Bay. When riding on the water, white face and white undersides well seen. Back, wings, throat, nape and crown are black. Large bill with yellow base and orange tip. Bright orange legs seen when the bird would dive or roll to its side. Best seen when six of us rented a skiff to get out in the bay, as the puffin was remaining too far out for photos from shore. Although The Sibley Guide to Birds (2d ed.) lists both this puffin and the auklets as 15", the puffin appeared to be a bit beefier in comparison.
