Observation details
🔴 Rare: Excellent first county record find by Fabricio Gorleri! Seen well foraging on south shore of pond under box elders. Subtle but beautiful color palette and unique behavior made it distinctive. After it first eluded us by vanishing into the honeysuckles just as we arrived, I (Caleb) walked around to the pond edge to look. After about 2 minutes, the bird suddenly flushed from a canarygrass clump right at my feet and fluttered audibly to the pond edge! After a few minutes, I relocated it with Courtney and Dave Nutter on the south shore, viewing from the north. Distinctive rallid about the size of a coot, but with a more upright posture (and much more willing to perch in vegetation). Warm brownish in color overall, with warm especially concentrated on neck in a strong ochre or coppery hue. Bill also warm-colored. Undertail coverts clean white and flashing as it incessantly flicked its tail! What an incredible find and such a win for the little Liddell Lab pond! So sorry to anyone who missed an opportunity when I forgot to @ the Discord RBA in my message. Hopefully no one missed it entirely as a result, since it continued long afterward! *Also note, our track for this list is not actually 3 miles long. New bug in the eBird app that I'm trying to resolve*
