NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 29. Bulk reel: 206 138 tape. Weather: After rain; cloudy. "Bell calls" and screams (apparently a conflict situation). Quality: 3 to 2. Level: +3. 3.75 & 7.5 ips. Std. Some "courtship growls" heard in part of the recording. Quality: 2 to 1-2. 7.5 ips. Std. "Bell calls" recorded during birds' brief reappearance. Quality: "1" (traffic noise). 7.5 ips. Std. Walking along the road I saw a bird in full view giving "bell calls." Before I could bring up the recording equipment the bird had moved and was in a bad position for recording but I started to record anyway. When the second bird became vocally active I shortly changed the focus to it. In reaction to playback this bird flew into view into a tree emerging far above the others, gradually worked its way to the very top, silent all the time, then flew over me to thick vegetation. With further playback, the bird moved farther away instead of coming back again. After some 5 minutes the bird flew back across me again and called briefly in full view before flying down the hillside. Other Behaviors: Court.
