NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 29. Bulk reel: 206 "Courtship growls." Some higher pitched growls are also heard: are these of P. argyrotis? are all of them of P. argyrotis? Identification not certain; could be of P. argyrotis. However their tone is so deep I think they must be of the present species even though the locality is unusual. Quality: 2. Level: +2. Red-brown tape (200 or Triton [Tridon?]. Original recording at 3.75 on 203. Copied N-IV to N-4.2. Filt. 100/3000 Hz. NOTE: 20/III/75. By my camp in woods on road to Rio de Oro, ~8 Km WSW + ~4km WNW, after 5:30 PM I heard the "bell calls" (some heard faintly in background of Dendrocolaptes certhia Cut 13) of this species. Shortly after I heard screams ("crows") resembling those of P. jacquacu (granti), although probably not as loud; the context suggested conflict of some kind. The next dawn I heard several displays, apparently all by the same bird. These were two-partite and the first part was short (~four beats), the second part long. Unfortunately I was not in a position to record (a tree had fallen on my truck during the night. Although I was in this area for a week (five days in this same camp plus three days in other camps) this was the only time I heard or noticed this species. Apparently it has been largely hunted out. 2/VI/73 - @Km 31new, clear. I was in area from 5:10AM. The first activity noted was a display@~5:18AM, up the slope. Another display, "far away" ~5:22AM; another by the first bird @~5:23; another same ~5:31. There were other displays after this but there was no activity in my immediate area. Other Behaviors: Court.
