Observation details
Adult bird perched in its favourite tree upon our arrival. White forecrown, supercilium, face and auriculars. White chin, throat and underparts. White rump exposed when the bird partially spread its wings. Suffused greyish tinge to hindcrown and pale grey nape and upperparts with the exception of the very prominent black upperwing coverts (i.e."black shoulder"). White tail with pale grey central rectrices. Black primaries on folded wing. Bright yellow legs and feet. Yellow cere at base of stubby black bill and black smudge between eye and cere visible. The bird was actively preening for the majority of period of observation. Yellow Warbler, Blue Jay, American Goldfinch (2) and Red-winged Blackbird all landed in the same tree at various times to investigate this rarity! Excellent, prolonged views through spotting scope. Digiscoped photos by Martha Burchat attached.
