Observation details
Buteo soaring with straight leading edge of wing. Finely barred tail of a juvenile, with a stronger dark bar at the tail tip that juvenile BWHA has but a RTHA doesn't seem to have. This spring bird appears to have translucent crescents like Crossley and Sibley say some juvenile Broad-wingeds have when molting primaries for a brief period in May-June. I couldn't see any dark patagial marks of a RTHA in the poor photos. I lean toward identifying this juvenile as a BWHA but RTHA could also be a possibility. What do you think?
