NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 17. Bulk reel: 205. a) 17 July 1968. 5:40 AM. Weather: Clear. (Less than half moon.) On site at 5:15 AM. The first activity occurred at ~5:40 AM when simultaneously one bird flew (from where I didn't see) and another gave a display. Quality: 2. Level: +12. No bird flew from B to A today so far as I could observe and I don't know the path of the flying bird but suspect it may have been from B to point below me (i.e. slightly to north of me) although if such were the case I would have thought the bird would have planed, for that would be all "downhill." The bird that displayed was just below me (slightly to north of me). (= C) At 5:44 a bird displayed way up the hill on the east ridge and I'm sure that was a different bird. Then about 2' later I heard, but couldn't see, a bird flying a bit to east from C and think it may have been the near bird that had displayed. Then ~ 1' later a bird flew from there up to a tree on the lower part of east ridge (i.e. above the road) but out of sight behind an intervening tree. (= D) 5:55 AM. A display, probably by same bird, simultaneously with time announcement by PAS. Quality: "2." Level: +12. I then played the displays of the field tape several times, then started to record with parabola directed a bit to right of where the bird was. Barely started recording and was making time announcement when the bird displayed, "flying" from D, across ravine to mid-Ridge (~= B). (This is the first time since late '66 that I have found the birds displaying here.) I saw the last part of this display. The bird obviously had started the display very shortly after take-off. Also the movement is too fast to be sure exactly what takes place but the bird obviously beats the wings more vigorously, and apparently with deeper strokes, than in normal flight. After this I played this recorded display several times but there was no apparent reaction. b) 18 July 1968. 5:40 AM. Weather: Clear. On site at 5:15 AM. The first sign of any activity was at 5:40 AM when a bird flew from mid-ridge to place well up on junction with west ridge. Then at 5:41 a display way up on west ridge and bird planed across to the other side, i.e. close to where the first bird had landed (a few calls heard here). Quality: 3. Level: +12. I then played field tape of displays and a bird planed back across the ravine (but stayed well up the ravine, not down near A). But further playing brought no further reaction. The only thing noticed after that was some "typical calling," some of which is saved. Quality: 3. Level: +14. At ~6:07 AM a bird planed from the point way up at junction down to somewhere ~ near B. Perhaps this was female returning to a nest?? I again tried playback, no apparent reaction. Other Behaviors: Perform Visual Display.
