Observation details
Rare, not expected annually in Berkshire. Initially heard behind Highland Woods as we were heading back to the car. Made its way from the hillside leading down to Eph Pond over Highland Woods to the far side of Proprietor's Fields, where it visited hummingbird, seed, and suet feeders before returning to its original location and disappearing. Relocated at 1:40pm at feeders. Fairly vocal in the morning and completely silent in the afternoon. While observing the bird I spoke with many residents I know here who came out to join, and they all report seeing it for up to a few weeks. Many have feeders and they are very attentive to the birds, expressing familiarity with other species including Red-bellied and recognizing the distinctive fully red head as something remarkable and different, suggesting this bird really has been present for weeks! They're excited to have a celebrity bird! The Senior Center is public property. Be careful not to park in restricted areas, though. Update: apparently a PAIR was observed shortly after I left this afternoon!!
