Observation details
Found by Susan Kaveggia and Star Howard at 12:30 PM when the bird flew in and landed on the island in Pond 2. This was a long-legged, long-necked bird, with a moderate length spear or dagger-like bill. The plumage was mostly gray, but with extensive rusty coloration in the upper wing coverts and scapulars, blackish outer primaries, a rusty or brownish crown and nape, and pinkish wash to the forehead. In comparison with a Great Egret, it stood about equally tall, but had slightly longer legs and a shorter neck, and the body was noticeably bulkier, appearing about twice as massive as the egret. During observation it vocalized several times, giving a short grebe-like call. It flew off at 3:30 PM, high and to the east and it did not seem likely that it was going to return.
