Observation details
Seen in riparian woodland to the south of the Columbia River levee in the last 50 yards of woods as you walk toward the fish ladders. I followed it as it moved about 5 times. It always perched at about twice to three times my height on horizontal limbs. It never moved far and did allow careful indirect approach, but never directly toward. Was successful at angling slightly away from it and slowly turning for the shot multiple times. NOTE: This GHO has a damaged eye. It appears to me that it has taken a strike in its left eye that has damaged its yellow iris. At first I thought the bird might have a concussion and uneven pupil size, but upon observing the jagged yellow iris, I'm coming down on the poke damage side. I have notified Audubon.
