Observation details
***Mega!!!*** Moments after a couple of other hikers overtook us on the trail, we heard a gruff squawking call, and as we were trying to decide if it was a mammal or bird, this large, reddish, long-tailed nightjar-shaped thing came flying up the trail toward us and landed on a low perch by the trail. A mountain-gem immediately started to mob it as it rocked gently like a leaf in the breeze (a la Rufous Potoo) and settled onto its perch. We were able to find an angle for some photos as it sat motionless. The location was near the highest point along the back side of the Robles Trail.
