NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 4. Bulk reel: 146 [Recordist indicated that he used a parabola but did not specify make/model.] a) This is a direct continuation of the recording from Cut 5) of Synallaxis castanea. Quality: 1-2 & 1. Level: -5, 0. 203 tape. This is apparently normal song. (One call by Synallaxis castanea is heard) (4-figure, then 5-figure). (Voice comments at end re: "other territory" refer to Synallaxis castanea.) b) 6:25 PM. (7:25 on tape in error.) Now, after playback. Quality: 1. Level: 0. 203, then 175 tape. Then after playback of above. Still song. Quality: 1. Level: -2. Shortly after stopping the previous recording, a bird (the motmot) in the immediate vicinity started "bleating." Quality: 1-2 & 2. Level: 0. 175 tape. 7.5 ips. Then some tentative song (and apparent quiet "conversation" between a pair?) c) ~ 7:15 AM. More "bleating" calls. Quality: 1. Level: -5 & o. 175 tape. 7.5 ips. Note re: identification: Up until this date I had been attributing the normal song of this species to Synallaxis castanea, on what basis I am unable to determine. As conditions today 4/V/71) gave me some doubts, I played back the recording from the 203 tape portion of Cut 4b) and was surprised to have this bird come up to 2 m. from me and in full view give the same song. As this identification is beyond question, I have now had to re-edit all the recordings previously filed under S. castanea. 6/V/74 PAS. Also, as this bird is obviously not the same as the Scytelopus latebricola, I am presently calling this bird Scytalopus caracae; at least until the whole Scytalopus question can be worked out. LNS: Reclassified from S. latebricola caracae to S. caracae. -M. Medler, 12 March 2009.
