Observation details
While scanning with a scope through the flock of California Gulls one gull stood out as different. Most noticeable were the yellow eyes and the dark back. The yellow bill had a red spot on the gonys. There was no obvious black on the bill as in the CAGU. When compared to the CAGUs the mantle and wings were very dark- sometimes appearing black depending on the angle. The legs did not stand out as bright yellow, but in the correct light they did appear yellowish. The head was more whitish than the CAGU ( whose heads were heavy mottled brown). When standing next to the CAGUs the size was similar. Withe the scope I thought I could detect a red/orange gap at times. When we first observed the gull flock they were resting/preening on a small island. After about 30 minutes all but two immature gulls (have listed as Gull Sp as I am still deciding if the are CAGUs or RBGUs). Went into the water. At that point the LBBG separated itself from the main groups of CAGUs. It stood in the water and preened. Eventually the CAGUs moved closer and I was able to get a comparison shot. I do not have experience with this gull species, so help is appreciated! Photos.
