Media notes
The bird called very close before we used playback, but flew off in the light rain. We then used playback and eventually the bird called once, very distant, as per this recording.
Observation details
We were in a shelter at 90 m altitude awaiting darkness to try for a boobook. We suddenly heard a Diabolical Nightjar call very nearby three times at about 5:50 PM and it continued calling two or three more times becoming more distant as it flew off. I would describe the call as a series of clear bubbling notes evenly spaced and in fairly rapid succession the first couple of notes louder and rising slightly, and the remaining 10+ notes falling in pitch/loudness slightly. Playback was attempted without response and the bird was not heard again by the time we left at about 7:30 PM. The bird was ID'd immediately by Nurlin and heard clearly by all in our party (me, Nurlin, his assistant Ika and three local chaps who drove us to the hill on their motorbikes and climbed the hill with us). We had heard one earlier in our tour, at Gunung Ambang, and listening to playback after hearing the initial calls confirmed to me that the call was identical and this was a Diabolical Nightjar. The local guys subsequently said they had heard this call before on a number of occasions.
