NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 1. Bulk reel: 93 The sounds of the displaying male are not loud. They seem to consist of a grating hissing sound, some deep grunts, apparently bill-snapping, some very high-pitched squeaks. Quality: 3+. Level: -3, 0. 203 tape. 3.75 ips. Copy from original at 7.5 & filt. 500/9kHz [rest of recordist's note too small to read]. The display consists of male's erecting his ruff so that it stands straight up and forms a shield frame all around the head. The head is pointed down with the bill against the ruff. The resulting pattern is a wide, shiney greenish-black frame with a black area in the center (the head) and the two light spots which are the eyes (these are buffy colored, very light, with a slight orangish cast. [App. in some populations, or individuals? ages? the eyes are red]). (Female's eyes are same color.) At times the male moves right over to the female and sort of touches, almost pushes (leans) against her with this ruff-head pattern. Also heard in this recording are calls by female. The "clop" calls at end are by Aramus guarauna. Then added a portion of the original recording: some calls by female; two grunts and "hiss" by male. Quality: 3+. Level: +3. 175 tape. 7.5 ips original record. Other Behaviors: Perform Visual Display.
