NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 1. Bulk reel: 71; Extra cut length: 7:31; Extra cut(s) on bulk reel: 72; Extra cut length: 12:00; Extra cut length: 4:57Weather: Fair.a) 4:30 PM. Well inside cave but before the first real "bird room." "Screams" of birds re-seeking position; "chicks" and "screams" of disturbed individuals. Quality: 1-2. Level: 0. Used parabola.b) Same place but no parabola. Quality: 1-2. Level: 0. c) Again with parabola and somewhat further into cave but still largely individual sounds. Quality: 1. Level: 0.d) ~ 6:15 PM-6:25 PM. Now near entrance to cave (but inside it) and getting dark; the birds are becoming active prior to leaving for the night's foraging. Parabola pointed toward inside of cave. Quality: 1-2. Level: +2.6:30 PM. Continuation of above. The birds are apparently beginning to move forward. Quality: 1. Level: 0. Used parabola.e) Continued with "open mike." No parabola.f) 6:40 PM. Now with parabola pointing back into cave. Quality: 1. Level: 0.g) Now with parabola pointing toward entrance to cave. Quality: 1-2. Level: 0.h) 6:50 PM to 7:00 PM. Now with parabola pointed back into the cave again. Quality: 1-2. Level: 0.During final ~ 3' the flashlight was turned on (birds retreated back into cave) and off (birds approach again).Note: During the night of 7 Jan 1971 I was camped along the road above the Cueva del Guacharo and on several occasions I heard "barks" rather like those of a night heron. I suspect those are the normal vocal communication of the birds when they are outside the cave; only rarely did I hear a "snarl" or "scream" such as recorded inside the cave. Sound stimulation was (other): presence of recordist. Other Behaviors: Emit Alarm. Habitat: Cave.
