NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 15. Bulk reel: 44 *Examples of "conflict" or "bother" calls or songs that I believe are of this species. They are similar to and correspond to the analogous calls of O. choliba but it now seems possible for me to distinguish between these calls of the two species. Unfortunately I had not yet become aware of the differences at the time of the violent conflict that preceded cut 13. a) 9/XI/65 10:50 PM. These occurred up on hill when the guatemalae were singing after I started playback of guatemalae. Quality: 3. Level: +10. b) This one occurred in same area but slightly closer during a time I was playing choliba. However, it was not given by choliba as the only choliba present was on the other side of the road and can be heard in background. (The fainter sound; same bird as in cut 9) of choliba. The louder sounding choliba is from the playback of field tape.) I had previously played guatemalae too, which had already "alerted" those birds. Quality: 3. Level: +10. c) 5/XI/65, km 19, 12:30 AM. By playback of guatemalae I brought into song several birds although one had started to sing normally before; see Cut 16. The closest were one on each side of the road near by [sic] position. These birds sang. Also some were ~ 40 m. to west. After some time I heard some "screams" or "wails" coming from that area. I do not think they were given by guatemelae but rather by Ciccaba virgata but they are filed here just in case they might be of guatemalae. Then about 1/2 minute later after more playback of guatemalae which can be heard on this tape, a call was given from the trees just on south side of road near me and I have no doubt that this call (similar to 15a & b) was given by guatemalae. (There was no choliba in evidence at this time and I had so far played no songs of choliba.) Quality: 3. Level: +10. Note: For an additional example of the "conflict call" of guatemalae (together with some of choliba), listen to Cut 10) of Ciccaba virgata. See also Cut 7) of Nyctibus grandis for a "conflict call" of guatemalae, no doubt given by that species, for no choliba or other Otus was in the area.
