NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 16. Bulk reel: 41. Weather: Fair. I was recording Caprimulgus rufus in the woods when suddenly this owl "barked" beside me. It was only 3 m. away and I saw it well with the flalshlight. Earlier this year, near Pirapia, another O. choliba barked at me the same way. I don't know the significance of the bark but suspect that it is a sort of alarm (perhaps young nearby) or an attempt at intimidation to frighten away "the too-close intruder." Quality: 1-2. Level: +5. No parabola. Habitat: Forest.
