Observation details
First seen perched on top of a bush at the edge of the parking area, as I was about to end the count. Flew west to a power pole along the road. First impression was of a pale pink-red underside on a bird much larger than a HOFI but smaller than a PIWO. I was able to get pictures as it perched on the power pole. The pictures I took show a dark head contrasting with pale gray nape and upper breast; iridescent green-black back; and rosy pink underparts. This is only the second time I've seen a LEWO in the county, and the first I've seen an adult. There was definitely a second bird on the power pole, which moved to the side/back of the pole in a woodpecker-like fashion and then flew before I got a good visual. I suspect it was also a LEWO, but am not at all certain. Reading parts of the Birds of North America Online account about them, I am surprised to learn that they have been known to breed in riparian cottonwood habitats. BNA also indicates that birds arrive on breeding grounds in early May - so perhaps this bird may breed in the area? When I saw it, I assumed it was a migrant.
