NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 4. Bulk reel: 19; Extra cut(s) on bulk reel: 20; Extra cut length: Time: 1750 to 1820 hours. I heard a bird singing the "normal" song (i.e., song like in Cut #1) about 200 m. away, on other side of lagoon, and decided to try the specially prepared field tape on which I had copied "normal" song from Cut 1 of this species, as well as the "dawn song" presently filed as Cut 8 of Herpetotheres cachinnans. I started playing the "normal" song and the bird immediately flew across the lagoon and alighted in the trees near me. I then played the "dawn" song and after a short while it started a rather formless vocalization that shortly turned into the "dawn" song. I then changed to recording tape. a) Is the "dawn" song the bird was now singing [sentence not finished in recordist's notes]. Quality: 1. Level: 4. 7.5 ips. Quality: 1. Level: 4. 15 ips. b) After a period of silence during which it flew to several different trees around me (no further playback), it then started a new session of "dawn" song which also began with the formless notes. Quality: 1. Level: 4. 15 ips. Note: The next morning (7/9). This bird was still (or again?) in the woods next to my camp and singing the "dawn" song. That evening (7/9) it was back at the same place as it had been the evening before, i.e. across the lagoon, and singing the "normal" song, just as the evening before. A recording of that follows: c) 7 Sep 1964 1800 hours. Weather: Fair. "Normal song." In background are Pitangus sulphuratus, Cercibis oxycerca, Crypturellus noctivagus. Note: There can now be no doubt that Cuts 3, 8, & 10 presently filed under Herpetotheres cachinnans really belong to the present species. Also, after careful listening I must conclude that Cuts 4, 5, & 7 now under cachinnans belong to still another species probably of Micrastur. These cuts have been properly refiled. Note: This bird had rich rufous underparts rather than white. Bird of Cut 1 had white. Response to playback: Approach.
