Observation details
Observed a quacking female Mallard explode up from San Jose Creek and broad-side an adult Black-crowned Night-Heron that was flying off with a duckling in its bill, at an elevation of about 10 feet above the bank of the creek. The impact grounded the heron, which landed in a dense stand of castor bean. The heron dropped the duckling, and I saw what was probably that baby duck later -- limping, but alive -- with one of the broods shown in the attached photos. Great drama!
