Observation details
After yesterday evening's discovery of 6 new goslings at this pond, I was anxious to come back and check on them. A couple who live on my street walked up shortly after I arrived and we immediately began talking about the goslings. My neighbor said that the mother of this brood was recently struck and killed on the road next to the pond, and after her death, the father flew off and abandoned the babies. He has not returned, so the babies are orphans and are on their own. Luckily, the resident pair of adults are still here with their single gosling (which is older and more developed than the orphans - see photo), but all 3 of them shun the orphans and periodically chase them (see photo). Luckily, the little ones keep coming back and try to stay as close to the adults as the adults will tolerate.
