Observation details
Pied-plumaged Grebe seen at least three times, first at 6:40 and 7:10 from Southerden St, then finally very well from Hoskins St (from which photos taken). Slightly larger, more elongate bird than surrounding Australasians, with a clear-cut cap extending below the eye slightly. Unlike Australasian, appears visibly long-billed and duck-like by virtue of more elongate structure. No yellow in gape. Potentially also an immature with it at 6:40, but more likely an Australasian, although note previous HHG records (e.g. 2013) in the city have included multiple birds at one site. Beware also at least one well-marked NB Australasian currently present that poses significant ID challenges, especially at distance.
