Observation details
Rare in Dona Ana county, and even more unusual considering it was in spiffy alternate plumage! A large "Pluvialis" plover with mostly jet black underparts, aside for the white vent/undertail coverts. Solid black face and underparts suggests an adult male. Broad white stripe on ether side running from the "shoulder", up the neck and around to the nape. Crown silvery. Upperparts a mottled white, silver, and black. Bill fairly long and dark, not as petite as I would expect structurally, for an American Golden-Plover. Dull gray legs. Plumage diagnostic. This bird did not open its wings while I was observing it, so I was unable to see the dark axillaries. Unfortunately the photos are fairly distant, but a stunning bird nonetheless!
