Observation details
First year bird. First spotted well at a distance, with no resolution to identification so we drove up to where we thought we may obtain a better view and the bird was relatively close by. A first cycle bird showing classic dull orange-yellow bill with slightly darker tip. The structure was slim all over, with a very long and slender bill as well as a long and elegant neck and shallow forehead. We did not see the bird walk, it was always in the water swimming. Eye was pale, and darker ear spot on white head was minimal. Otherwise pale pearl gray above on mantle, black primaries, and body and neck white. We did not see an open wing, so we were not able to study wing or tail patterns. Wing coverts seemed to mostly have molted in already as little dark was seen there, mostly even gray already.
