Observation details
Hanging out together, sandy-colored dorsal side much lighter than nearby Killdeer, orange legs, narrow dark headband between eyes, dark eyes contrasted with light faces unlike Semipalmated Plovers. 1 had leg bands. Port side: white band at bottom and green band midway. Starboard side: orange band at bottom, black band midway, and a green band at the very top of leg. (photos below) Joel J. forwarded our sighting and we received this response: "Hi Shari and John, Thank you for reporting this banded piping plover! This bird was banded as a chick 7/1/2012 on the Missouri River near Yankton, SD by researchers from Virginia Tech. He spend his winters on the gulf coast of Florida and was last seen there on April 2nd. In the past few years, he has nested on Lewis and Clark Lake and on the Niobrara River in Nebraska. Thanks again for sending along this resight! Our birds aren't seen very often during migration. What a neat coincidence that this bird and John share a bday! This chick was the last to hatch from its brood, 2 siblings hatched on the 29th and 1 on the 30th of June. Sometimes the last to hatch have trouble keeping up with the rest of the brood, but this guy is a success story. He has a special place in my heart as one of the first plovers I handled and one who spends time on the lesser-used Niobrara River, where I do my master's research. I'm glad you enjoyed hearing about this bird and were able to catch a rare glimpse of him during migration. Thanks again and let me know if you have any questions, Meryl"
