Observation details
This is a strictly coastal species. Unlike most true geese, these "sheldgeese" (genus Chloephaga) usually show considerable sexual dimorphism. In this one the male is pure white, while the female is very dark as seen here. This adult female shows green iridescence on its greater coverts lacking in juveniles. Unlike other sheldgeese, we never encountered these birds in flocks. Instead they were single or in pairs. This is the nominate race found on the mainland, while a larger race is restricted to the Falkland (Las Malvinas) Islands.
