Observation details
heard only. rattle calls recorded. analysis following this guide (http://oldbird.org/pubs/fcmb/species/longspur/rattles.htm). rattles between 3 and 5 notes in length with peak frequencies occurring between 4.5k hz (second, louder rattle at 0:06) and 5k hz (first, quieter rattle at 0:01). each note approximately 15 ms long with an average of 55 ms between each note. TBLO's peak frequencies in their rattle calls are around 5.7k hz. The intensity of each note in TBLO's rattle call picks up halfway, which could create the illusion of a peak around 5k hz, but in this spectrogram there is a very clear upsweep in pitch that is near the same intensity as the rest of each note (i.e., equal volume throughout). TBLO's rattle notes are much longer, at about 28 ms per note. The shape and 'width' of each note in SMLO's rattle call is similar to LALO, but the peak frequency is around 5.6 hz, and like TBLO, this is higher than the bird in question. SMLO's rattle calls also typically have 5 to 7 notes, unlike the 3 to 5 heard from this individual. CCLO's rattle call has a much different timbre and varies in pitch substantially. The bird was flushed with a small group of longspurs (silent) on two occasions centered around this point (31.45490, -110.63544). I first heard the call north of the road while driving slowly and I immediately recognized it as a longspur sp OTHER than the expected CCLO. I identified as TBLO at the time because I was unfamiliar with how similar the rattle calls of these birds were and due to limited experience with them. I tried to find it to no avail; about a minute later a flock flushed just south of the road (I hadn't seen where they first landed, as I was in my car) and flew a considerable distance east. I made this recording the second time. Attempts to relocate after this point were unsuccessful. image of spectrogram of call at 6 seconds:
