Observation details
At feeder, eating food on ground under feeder. Bird had a short tail, but a black mark on neck and looked like a chunky mourning dove. However, when looking it up, the white winged dove was the only one with white lining the edge of the wings. I noted it was a rare bird to see in Alaska, but I could not identify it as any other kind of dove. I took a few ground photos, but they were not good at showing the white. My sister, Jane Smith, took these pictures, where the white can be clearly seen, as well as the black mark on the neck and the shorter tail. This bird has been seen at the feeder since at least January of 2023, coming and going along with other birds during feeding times. It appears to travel alone, however, not in a mixed flock.
