Observation details
***rare, 3rd state record. First spotted apparent adult roosting with RBGU at 7:27am, it stayed preening actively until 8:40am when it abruptly flew distant to the northwest (Conimicut Point direction). Small white headed gull similar to nearby Ring-billed Gulls with comparatively darker back, thin and pointed bill, small rounded head, and pale green legs. Faint streaking just above the eye extending back down the neck. Showed contrasting white crescents on the back, faint ring on bill and dark eye. Primaries: large white “windows” on the P10-P9, black on P9 extending to primary coverts, black on P7 outer web extending half the feather and diagnostic white tongue, and minimal black on the P5. Features which should eliminate RBGU, Kamchatka, and SBIG. See photos for spread wing shots.
