Observation details
Continuing adult, first found by C. Will on 6 January and then relocated by A. Brees on 14 January. After quite a bit of effort at various times today, I finally had it flying over the farmstead at 4:30 PM. It came from the SSE and just continued low to the NNW. I never saw it perched. A long-winged Buteo with somewhat tapered wings. Uppersides rusty with broad pale crescents in the wings. Basal half of the tail was white, blending into a very pale rust color. Underside of wings mostly white with sparse, rufous spotting in the underwing coverts. The bird also had rusty-colored, barred "leggings". The yellow gape was long, extending back to under the eye. It must have been eating well, its crop was bulging.
