Observation details
Possible Anna’s x Costas, but likely just an aberrant Anna's. Initially detected by call, which immediately stood out to me as the tone was different than typical Anna's. The tone is hard to describe but not similar to Costa's at all, maybe huskier. I was too focused on trying to photograph this bird it never occurred to me to grab a recording. Sang once, typical Anna's song. Structurally looked very squatty and small, but never came close enough to another Anna's to offer a good size comparison. Wingtips reached end of tail, but looked stretched, unlike the typical structure of Costa's wings. Gorget is colored like a typical Anna's Hummingbird, the only difference being a longer white eyebrow somewhat suggestive of Costa's. Bill is not particularly long, but is very thick near the base, seems somewhat deformed. Stayed away from the other Anna's buried deep in a bush, occasionally came out in the open to attack other hummingbirds visiting the closest feeder. Bird sat deep in its bush until the Sharp-shinned Hawk attacked the feeders, when I saw it fly and land on the top of a bare tree for a few seconds, allowing better looks at its structure.
