Observation details
Excellent find by Julie Neff-Encinas, congrats! Bird was collecting acorns from oaks in adjacent community park and stashing them in the palm trees where originally located. Plenty to pick, the oaks were loaded. Was regularly giving oriole/blackbird like chatter and cheg call when in flight or irritated. Seemed to hold its own avoiding Gilas. This youngster is retaining alot of juvenile plumage currently. Interestingly this species varies significantly on rate and extent of molt in formative plumage period. Red was sparsely mottled in face with a large blotch confined to the nape. Most of back was barred with brown edging. Flanks had light streaking and secondaries mostly retained subterminal bar with a cool second bar. This bird hasnt grown up much yet, I feel you RHWO, me neither.
