foraging with Kinglets
Observation details
Fourth state record and first in 18 years. Continuing bird, found by Chad Crouch on the 24th and reported on the 28th. Refound this morning by Mark Selle. Liam first saw the bird at 11:35 flying overhead at the east end of the island. A few minutes later, I relocated the bird by its chip calls from a nearby conifer. A few seconds later we got visual of the bird and confirmed it was the warbler in question. 5 of us watched the bird for over an hour after the initial sighting as it worked through the trees at the east end of the park with kinglets, sometimes coming down into the open at eye level, giving phenomenal views. An overall large looking Setophaga. Small all black warbler bill, with faded black eye stripe running from the bill to the back of the cheek. Faint pale olive tinged yellow green cheek patch contrasting with bright yellow eyebrow and border to the underside of the cheek. Lemon yellow eye arcs we're visible at close range as well. The crown and back were the same color, a slightly darker shade of the yellow green then on the cheek. Back showed some faint gray black streaking/checkering, but still well within BTNW range in my opinion, not enough to make it a hybrid. Pale gray wings with two thin white wingbars. Also a bit of yellow feathers on the upper wing above the first wingbar which seems pretty normal for BTNW. Rump a yellow green color, no streaking. Underside and throat was a creamy white, with a bit of black/gray feathering coming in on the sides of the neck and throat. Clean gray streaks running down the sides to the vent, thickest closer to the neck. Vent area the same creamy white as the underparts. Underside of the tail showed a pattern of white with gray edging, and fanned tail in flight showed a gray tail with three to four white outer tail feathers, classic of Setophagas. Wing undersides a plain gray, whiter near the body. Called every couple minutes, a YRWA like chip note, a bit flatter and more watery then YRWA.
