Observation details

Shama Notes On page 63 of my 1997 Philippine trip field notebook (see photos below), I wrote at the time of observation: “ - Blk bird except belly, flanks which are white, etc. outer rectrices wht, bulk cylindrical bill” = Palawan Shama♀. As I explained in dBird details on the Greater Cormorant sighting, I wrote the above note out in the field as my wife and I were actually observing the bird. Later the same day, upon our return to our lodging, we would review review the illustrations in duPont’s Philippine Birds and also carefully read duPont’s text description, in this case, on p. 295: “Male—all black with a glue gloss, except for lower flank, under tail-coverts, and outer rectrices, which are white. Female—similar to male but having black duller and having buffy white on lower abdomen. The .csv file that I uploaded into eBird has the record of Black Shama. From review of my notes, it should be Palawan Shama. I conclude that I must have selected the wrong species when transferring my field notebook data, years later, into electronic format, viz. BirdRecorder 32. Or very possibly I selected the wrong one when I was attempting to resolve associated with my import into eBird based on the specific epithet of the species name “Copsychus niger.” I’ve studied Latin, so translated the “niger” into “black”; thus Black Shama, albeit not a correct identification….. I rechecked my entry into BirdRecorder 32 and it appears that is when/where I made the mistake by recording a Black Shama instead of a White-vented Shama. I intend to delete the record of Black Shama from my list and replace the sighting with White-vented Shama which apparently is the most recent name revision for this bird.
