Observation details
Saw three birds, one in the distance and then saw one well sitting on the road--have a poor photo. After the "road" bird flew back to the bar pit, it was joined by another and they flew back an forth across the road in front of the car as we followed them for about .10 mile. There was considerable distance between the first bird seen flying about 100 yards over the horizon from our viewing point moving south and the other two were about 200 yards to the northeast from this viewing point. The one sitting on the road seen at 6:22 had a light-colored breast with fine, dark, vertical streaking. No visible ear tufts. A landowner had reported seeing winter "ground owls" in this area for years and we have access to their private property near Thurston Reservoir.
