Observation details
I obtained some good photos of this species today. I always love coming to the western edge of Iowa each October in search of this species. They are actually common in this area in migration, but it takes a certain technique to see them well. You have to walk through the marsh in the early morning and methodically find them as they are flushed and be patient as they pop up again. Their call notes are distinctive and help locate the birds. I made sure to look for features on the birds to differentiate them from Nelson's Sparrows. I was very careful with this count and counted the birds individually. Exact count.
