Observation details
Flushed at a distance when walking in to the celery patch just west of Connie Lake. Perched for a few seconds before flying up and over the bluff and never to be seen again. Quick views, but after just spending time watching the Red-backed Shrike on the other side of the island, a few things were clear that this was a second shrike of a different species. The mask was far more extensive into the lores and toward the nape and it was substantially darker. The bill was also much more substantial in size. The back, tail, and nape were more uniformly warm brown. Light edging to the tail feathers is an photo artifact of the backlighting, and in flight, r6 edges did not appear white or contrasting with the tail. Mask size and boldness, bill size, warm brown colors throughout tail, mantle, and nape without a grayish nape (note grayish patch behind eye is okay) suggest Brown Shrike. Primary projection and tail graduation hard to assess from photos.
