Observation details
We first noticed an interesting shorebird species while scoping from the upper parking area, it seemed bulkier than nearby yellowlegs, but was overall buffy colored. We were wondering at Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, but it seemed way too big. As we slowly got closer (over the course of at least an hour, trying to find access to the mud on the west/northwest side of the pond) it kept looking more interesting, and we finally got some good looks and digiscope photos (attached). Yellow legs, buffy coloring, relatively small, all dark bill that curves down. Dark cap and rufous wash down the front. We also managed to get a couple photos showing the difference between it and a yellowlegs and a nearby pectoral sandpiper.
