Observation details
Large dark crow-sized woodpeckers with red crest and black and white stripes on head. One male photographed with red mustache and large white patches on dark wings. Various species of birds were being harassed by two Merlins including Blue Jays, Northern Flickers, and two Pileated Woodpeckers. A subsequent “mobbing” of the Merlins occurred. Repeated attempts by the Merlins to capture nearby birds occurred over twenty minutes or so. Hearing the ruckus, I grabbed my camera to get photos while all birds were preoccupied. Photos included.
