Observation details
Photo’s. I observed this first fall vireo for approximately 30 minutes in a variety of angles and light as it fed, often at close distance (< 20’). Bright yellow breast and throat with yellow the brightest in the center of the breast and throat. Mostly yellow underside, including the undertail coverts — the only white was confined to center belly. The first and most notable general impression was the strong facial markings, and this included darker cap than most WAVI’s and a strong dark eyeline that extended through the eye and into lores — almost gave it a REVI look. Also noticeable was it’s short tail (compared to WAVI) and dark primary coverts visible from side angles. When comparing this bird’s bill to other WAVI’s seen and photographed throughout the day, my impression is that it is slightly shorter and thinner. All of these characteristics look good for PHVI to me. I have observed and photographed PHVI in Texas and other midwest states, but am no expert on this species. I welcome any comments or criticism of my ID (my email is on my profile). The bird was primarily using the edge habitat around the lower picnic/apple tree area. I was not able to review and post my photos until later in the evening.
