Observation details
Saw this bird next to a non-breeding plumage Common Tern. The legs were shorter on the Arctic Tern than on the Common Tern, so it looked like it was almost laying on the long when standing. It also had a solid black cap (forehead, crown and upper nape). The back was a darker shade of gray than what the Common Tern had, and the folded primaries were the same shade of gray as the back color was, as was the breast area too. I could see the contrast between the gray breast and the white cheek patch area. Bill size was smaller than the Common Tern, and appeared all red but the lighting wasn't the greatest to see this feature. Photos were taken by Myles Hurlburt.
